Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

Tuesday, Aug. 21

Schwartz Rounds to examine provider-patient conversation

Vickie Skinner, director of continuing health professional education, will facilitate the next Schwartz Center Rounds, “The Conversation Every Provider and Patient Should Have,” from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

All health care providers are invited to the event, which also will include speakers Dr. Katharine H. Travis, associate professor of medicine; Sue Meng, social worker; Stephanie Jones, interim general counsel; and Jeffery Murphy, hospital chaplain.

Medicine prof, palliative expert talk serious illness

Dr. Keith Mansell, professor of medicine, and Carole Ward, palliative care and support services nurse, will present Department of Surgery Grand Rounds, "Serious Illness Conversation Guide," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Physiology prof to give biotech, renal disease update

Dr. Alejandro Chade, professor of physiology and biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Biotechnology and Renal Disease: An Update About the Search for Novel Therapies," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Pathology prof to explore Alzheimer's basic, translational research

Dr. Junming Wang, professor of pathology, will present the School of Medicine seminar, "Basic and Translational Research in Alzheimer's Disease," from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

CommUNITY Day to offer fellowship, diverse speakers

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Associate Student Body's Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host UMMC CommUNITY Day from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Mayo Clinic professor to present Davis Hand Lectures

Dr. Scott P. Steinmann, professor of orthopaedics at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, will present the J. T. Davis Hand Lectures, "Orthopaedics and Life," and "Complex Elbow Fracture Dislocations," from 6:30-9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, in classroom 3A.

Dr. Robert E. Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

The presentation will include an update on the University and Medical Center for the next fiscal year and recognition of faculty with 20 years of service. Full-time faculty with 20 years of continuous service to UMMC should contact Dorothy Singleton by Saturday, Sept. 1.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition
Top scholars from Mississippi colleges and universities will join Medical Center students in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive health-care competition with audience participation, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the RICE Bowl is an academic competition in which team members answer questions and solve a complex health-care case. Attendees will have the opportunity to sound off during the event as well.
